Welcome to Corfìnio, an Abruzzi town of 970 inhabitants and the ancient capital of the noble Pelìgni people.

The city originated around the 5th century BC in a morphologically favourable area, on a plateau bounded by the Atèrno and Sagittario rivers. 

Subsequently, urban growth was concentrated along the access roads to the city, which partly coincide with today's State Road 5 (the ancient Via Valèria) and the provincial road to Pràtola Pelìgna.

In 91 BC, during the war of the Italic peoples against Rome to obtain political rights, Corfinium was designated as the capital and-during the two-year conflict a crucial role. Here the first coin of the insurgents was minted, bearing the inscription "ITALY," which became the new name of Corfinium and, centuries later, of the entire nation. Despite Rome's victory, citizenship was still granted to the provinces that had fought valiantly.

After the passage of Caesar in 49 BC and the establishment of the Pax Romana, an important period of urban development began. 

Emperor Claudius enhanced the road system in the region with the construction of the Via Clàudia Nòva; a notable bath complex was erected by Sergius Cornelius Dolabèlla in 113 CE, and a new temple was built at the same time at the behest of Gnèo Àlfio Massimo.

The presence of pottery and coins testifies to continuous and frequent occupation until the fourth century AD.

Beginning in the 9th century, the Roman city was slowly rebuilt,, taking on the typical forms of the medieval village (which would be almost destroyed by the 1706 earthquake).

In the 19th century, the philologist Antonio De Nino was born in Corfinio, a figure of great local renown who devoted his entire life to recovering the town's glorious history.
